Our story

76 years,
one studio.

Black and white portrait of a laughing family of four

Where it started

Late Shri Wasudeo Hiralal Varma opened Moonlight Studio in Nagpur in 1950, when a studio portrait was an occasion you dressed up for. Families came for weddings, for new babies, for the photograph that would hang in the hall for decades.

The studio grew with the city. Film gave way to digital, and the families who came in the early years began bringing their children, then their grandchildren.

Still a family studio

Today the studio is known as Umesh Varma's Dharampeth Moonlight, and Umesh Varma behind the camera is the reason many families keep coming back.

The work is the same as it always was: a painted backdrop, a carefully placed light, and enough patience for the real expression to show up. Alongside portraits we make passport and visa photographs, product images for local businesses, restorations of old family prints and personalised gifts.

What hasn't changed

Light, set by hand

Every face gets its own key light, placed and adjusted while you sit.

Patience first

Children warm up, elders get tired, couples get shy. We give each sitting the time it needs.

Made to be printed

We still think a portrait belongs on a wall. Prints, frames and albums are finished at the studio.
